The La Crosse area is home to many miles of bicycle and pedestrian trails, a good bus transit system, Amtrack train service, and home to the world’s largest pre-owned hybrid car store.

Area Mass Transit Options:

  • Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Volunteer Driver Program, provide rides for elderly, disabled, less fortunate

The GreenLaCrosse.com event "A Green Discussion with Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton" was an all-inclusive public forum held at the Gundersen Lutheran Rasmus Center on April 20.

The non-partisan event was attended by local leadership, including Rep. Jennifer Schilling, Sen. Dan Kapanke, Mayor-elect Matt Harter, Jeff Thompson of Gundersen Lutheran and Brian Rude from Dairyland Power. Citizens, entrepreneurs and government convened to share ideas and foster the growth of the Green Economy in the La Crosse area.

Green Economy Agenda
"Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton’s Green Economy Agenda is a series of proposals to empower smart individual and institutional action related to energy independence and climate change as a strategy to strengthen Wisconsin’s competitive position in a global economy" (Source: 2008 Office of the Lt. Governor).



There are many local organizations and businesses adopting more environmentally friendly transportation options.

  • City of La Crosse:
    Purchasing biodiesel blends for the MTU whenever prices are comparable; working to bring a car sharing program to La Crosse; testing Neighborhood Electric Vehicles for City departments.

  • La Crosse County:
    Highway Department using biodiesel in summer months; some hybrid cars as fleet vehicles.

  • UW-La Crosse:
    Bicycle rental program.

  • Gundersen Lutheran:
    Hybrid vehicles for between campus commutes.

  • Western Technical College:
    Neighborhood Electric Vehicle for security
