Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

Free Film Screening: “Food Inc.”“Food Inc." at Franciscan Spirituality Center is part of FSC “Movies of the Spirit” series - FREE admission

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

CSA Farms Bus TourTake a literal "field trip" to tour 2 CSAs!

Come with us to learn about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and tour two organic family farms set amidst the rolling hills and ridges of Vernon County’s farm country. Both of the farms offer CSA memberships, which allow you to invest in their annual harvest and reap the reward of fresh, local, organic produce throughout the growing season. Our visits to Ridgeland Harvest and Small Family farms will give attendees a chance to meet the farmers, learn about their operation, and glimpse daily life on the farm.

Ridgeland Harvest is a diverse, certified organic farm in Viroqua, Wisconsin owned and run by Cate and Mat Eddy and their young boys. They have been raising vegetables, small grains, and livestock on their 70-acre farm since 2000. The farm has been certified organic since 2004. Their produce is sold primarily through CSA memberships, but also through farmer’s markets, food cooperatives, and directly to restaurants. CSA members are always welcome to visit the farm, and the farmers host several events throughout the year including a garlic harvest, raspberry U-Pick, and pumpkin fest as ways to become more connected to the farm.

Small Family Farm is located near LaFarge, Wisconsin in the Driftless Coulee Region. Organic farmer Jillian Jacquinot and her small family are stewards of 21 beautiful ridge top acres of land. The Small Family CSA farm primarily markets their organic vegetables through their CSA program, you will also find them at Viroqua and Madison Farmer’s Markets. They raise pastured pigs and chickens in moveable pens to mimic a more sustainable farm ecosystem. They take a special interest in the mineral balancing, organic matter and fertility levels of their soil while supplying a 100 member CSA program with a weekly bounty of seasonal produce. If you live nearby, the farm may consider work in exchange for a portion of or all of the cost of your CSA membership.

Registration deadline: Wednesday April 14th.

Free Film Screening: “No Impact Man”In "No Impact Man" Colin Beavan decides to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for the next year.

It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, busses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage.

No problem – at least for Colin – but he and his family live in Manhattan. So when his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact of its own.

Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein's film provides an intriguing inside look into the experiment that became a national fascination and media sensation, while examining the familial strains and strengthened bonds that result from Colin and Michelle’s struggle with their radical lifestyle change.
